NARU INDIGENOUS CORPORATION
Working towards wellbeing for our mob
Naru Indigenous Corporation offer facilitation of a healthy lifestyle & wellbeing programs for our community. The Ocean is a significant aspect of our culture and the benefit of promoting a healthy lifestyle in an open and safe environment.
The ocean knowledge, surf skills, First Aid and lifesaving training that Naru Indigenous Corporation delivers to both youth and adults builds capability and resilience to support individuals to better manage ongoing and difficult situations.
We have run the annual Naru Surf Gathering since NAIDOC Week in 2017
and we have proudly raised funds and awareness for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention as a part of our Gathering.
We are proud to have shared the gift of Surfing with over 300 Indigenous young people in the last 12 months.
A LITTLE MORE ABOUT OUR JOURNEY..
Naru Indigenous Corporation knows that our strength lies not only in the words we stand by, but most importantly through the actions of our initiatives. Our team have passionately volunteered their time and efforts since early 2017.
In 2017 we marked 20 years since Community and Aboriginal Surfing Legend Eric Mercy through the Inaugural Naru Surf Gathering. Eric was a well known Aboriginal Surfer in the 80's & 90's sponsored by Quiksilver and other successful surfing brands. Eric represented Aboriginal Surfing on an International level in Hawaii and other Pacific Nations. Eric was a Community Liaison Officer who dedicated years of his life to Community projects and endeavours including Surf Camps and trips for Aboriginal Youth on the Mid North Coast of NSW.
All proceeds from our Gathering's over the years have been donated to Mental Health and Suicide Awareness.
All proceeds were donated to Black Dog Institute from 2017. Our Gathering grew in 2018 and we were able to again donate to worthy causes Joe Williams Enemy Within Foundation and Manam Girrilma Guyunggan Womens Elders Group. In 2019 we donated to Thirrili Organisation which provides crucial supports to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples suffering grief, loss and trauma due to the loss of a loved one through suicide and other critical incidents.
We believe in the power the ocean has, and the healing it can bring.
In 2020 we knew we needed to adapt and decided that we could build so much more for the Community we live in and surrounding Communities. We proudly launched Naru Goori Groms which is expected to engage over 300 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Young People from various Communities on the mid north coast and throughout NSW.
NARU INC IS A REGISTERED CHARITY.
"I can’t thank you enough for the surf lesson yesterday with our young people.
Often external service providers find it hard to connect with our young people because of the challenging behaviours they can display at times as a result of their complex trauma.
It was so nice to see the Naru Team connect so well with the young people. I cant tell you the difference it has made. Not sure if you are aware but out of the three young people who surfed the most, one of them has only been in the ocean 3 times in his life, one is very quiet and struggles with new environment and one was the happiest I had ever seen him since entering our program"
